Today in history (1831), Belgium gained its independence from the Netherlands. Belgium is situated on the North Sea bordering the Netherlands to the north, Germany to the east, Luxembourg to the south east, and France to the west. It has a population of 11 million, and is mostly divided between French and Dutch speakers. Brussels (pop. over 8.1 million), the capital city, is located in central Belgium and is home to NATO, and the EU headquarters.

Really educational article, by Samuel Blackstone with great statistics to show that separating families, and locking up drug users is not a solution that is solving any drug related problems. "Portugal's move to decriminalize does not mean people can carry around, use, and sell drugs free from police interference. That would be legalization. Rather, all drugs are "decriminalized," meaning drug possession, distribution, and use is still illegal."

Anytime there is Czech travel news, you can count on seeing it here. I taught there for a year, and look forward to returning. The best time for a drinker to go to Europe is in the fall to hit up all the Oktoberfests. "Beer is deeply rooted in the Czech psyche. And, at less than two bucks for a half-liter glass, it's a relative bargain."
Looking for places to eat, drink, stay and catch a wave? Nat Geo has the top 20 list for you. I can vouch for the surf in Bali, but that's it.
